FAQs
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation is a safe, non-surgical hair remedy for men and women. It is a highly specialised process whereby we tattoo all-natural pigments under the dermal layer of the skin to give the appearance of shaved hair.
Who can have scalp micropigmentation?
At ScalpMaestro we welcome all men and women over the age of 18. Whether you want a bald spot patched up, to cover any patches from FUT/FUE scarring, increase the look of your hair's density, or a completely new appearance of a shaved head, get in touch. We'd be happy to discuss how SMP at ScalpMaestro can help.
SMP is not suitable for pregnant women or people with skin conditions on their scalp such as psoriasis, dermatitis, folliculitis and severe dandruff. At ScalpMaestro, we do not offer SMP for people who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
How long will scalp micropigmentation take?
Again this will depend on the service you require - filling in a bald patch could take 30 minutes, while a complete restoration could take 5 hours per session. The size of a person's head also determines how long you're in the treatment room for. To some people, 5 hours can feel like a long time so feel free to bring earphones, a book etc. Over the course of the session, we'll change positions to get all areas you desire SMP. Remember it's your treatment; you're welcome to take a comfort break whenever you need.
How many sessions will I need?
We expect each person to require between 2 to 4 layers of SMP. At ScalpMaestro, we usually build layers to give a more natural look to the scalp. Bear in mind that the before and after images you will see on social media will likely be after a course of treatment and not after one session. Book a consultation now to find out more.
What will be head look like afterwards?
Generally the head can look a bit red straight after the treatment and this is completely normal as we have pierced the dermal layer of the skin with a needle. The redness usually disappears after 2 days although we wouldn't recommend covering the treated areas with make-up because this can lead to infection. We also advise against wearing hats, sun exposure and using cosmetics on your scalp. More information is found in the aftercare leaflets provided in the first consultation.
How much does scalp micropigmentation cost?
The big question! Scalp micropigmentation can cost anything between £150 to £700 per session at ScalpMaestro, but prices will vary depending on your needs. During the first consultation, we'll give you an accurate estimation so you're not left with any surprises.
How long will the treatment last?
After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions), a client should expect the strength of the colour to last for many years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolouring) of the treatment. When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch-up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.
What happens in the first consultation?
1. We'll discuss your desired outcomes from scalp micropigmentation and how much it will cost.
2. We'll guide you through the process, so you know what to expect from each session, including familiarising you with the equipment and inks we use and any patch tests needed.
3. We'll also discuss aftercare instructions, so you finish your sessions feeling confident to maintain your achieved look.
Does scalp micropigmentation hurt?
As the needle penetrates the dermal layer of the skin, it can hurt. Pain management can help but is not recommended right before the treatment. A good night's sleep and drinking plenty of fluids is a good idea.
Are there any risks associated with scalp micropigmentation?
As with all cosmetic treatments, there are horror stories about SMP going wrong. This can happen when an untrained practitioner uses the incorrect ink, poor equipment or lacks understanding and experience. At ScalpMaestro, our practitioner has been trained by one of the top SMP teachers in the UK and has over 5 years' experience of treating people with SMP.
What is a patch test?
A patch test is a skin test to see if you have any allergies to the ink that we use. You may require one before the treatment. We create 5 small dots on the area that you choose and within 24-48 hours, we see if there is a reaction. This is usually done in the first consultation.
Is scalp micropigmentation basically a tattoo?
Yes and no. We use a tattoo pen machine and dip the pen in ink to give a semi-permanent outcome, like a tattoo, but unlike conventional tattoos, we use a specific tattoo ink which maintains the mimicked tone of the scalp. We also use specific needles for precise dot work to match any existing hair follicles on the head.
